Day 6Thursday, 12th JuneMy kind of town!
It was a very warm day - not a storm in sight, although Chicago was on tornado watch!
At 11:00am, we were boarding the Shoreline Cruises boat, "Marlyn", for a 30-minute shoreline cruise on Lake Michigan. It was lovely! Such a wonderful skyline! After the boat trip, we had lunch and had a look around the shops.
We next took a taxi to Sears Tower. I had already bought and printed tickets online - but Paul refused to go up. Terry and I didn't have to wait in line at all, but we did have to sit through the movie on the history of Sears Tower. I must say that, by the end of it, I'd become a little nervous about going up to the observation deck! We zoomed up to the 103rd floor and the observation deck was, mercifully, indoors, so I didn't find it too much of a problem to look out of the window! What staggering views! Brilliant! When we came back down, we met Paul in the park opposite and took some pictures of the tower from there. We were approached by a hobo who gave us postcards (!) in return for our spare change - ie. most of our coins!!! We walked all the way down to the Art Institute before getting a taxi back to the hotel, where we had a look at the swimming pool and exercise room on the 27th floor. Supper tonight was a b-b-q! Burgers + hot dogs + beans, salad etc and it wasn't too bad at all - very filling - certainly we wouldn't need anything else to eat! We then walked down by the river again; it is so beautiful. Then we decided to take a taxi down to the Buckingham Fountain, which, in retrospect, was a mistake, as it wasn't all that impressive! At 9:00pm, the fountain shot up in the air and music blared out! This was the most exciting bit, as a few people got taken unawares and were drenched! We walked a little of the way back to Dearborn Street, but our feet were killing us and we were sweating buckets, so we got a taxi, outside Millenium Park, the rest of the way 'home'.
