Day 12Wednesday, 18th JuneThe RockiesWe had a thunderstorm at 4:30am! On with the light - in with the earplugs!! We were up at 7:30 - the sky was black and there was another storm at 9:00am!! We left at 9:30. Once into Colorado, we decided to break the tedium a little, and just do a little bit of the Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. It would, after all, be a pity to be so close to the Rockies but not actually go into them and, besides, we had a NP card, so it wouldn't cost us anything. So we turned off at Loveland (which looked a lovely place) and drove through the Big Thompson Canyon. However, there was gloom all around, so we drove through Estes Park, entered RMNP and drove about 10 miles up the road! It was very pleasant though. We retraced our steps, back through Estes Park and the Canyon and stopped at WalMart in Loveland for some provisions (including mozzie spray, nail polish and some Jollies stickers!). By this time, it was getting late and, by the time we reached Denver, it was twilight. We found our hotel without too much bother, Embassy Suites, Denver South-East and settled into room 302. We had originally been allocated a room on the 7th floor, but, as there was a balcony, we changed that to a lower floor! This was our first stop in an Embassy Suites and we were delighted with our suite. There were two separate rooms with two double beds (and a balcony) in one and a kitchenette and sofabed in the other (with a door opening onto the attractive atrium). The only weird thing was that there was a door to the bathroom in each room (so you had to lock both if you needed to!) and the only annoying thing was that they charged for internet access (though not very much). I had been starved of the internet for three days, so I spent some time uploading photographs etc. And we were so tired, that we decided to order room service, rather than go out. It was splendid! Just sandwiches - LOL! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
