Day 13Thursday, 19th JuneDown by the Rio GrandeA good night was had by all, we missed breakfast and it was time to get going! We had all motorway, at first, cruising down the I-25, stopping at Colorado Springs, briefly, to watch the sky divers. We contined down through Pueblo (quite an untidy looking place) and turned off at Walsenbury, enjoyed lunch in this time-warp place and headed off onto Highways 160 and 285, which were much more scenic, into New Mexico.
We were on the road to Taos and, it wasn't long before we were parking up and walking around the Plaza. It was quaint, but not as interesting as I had expected. What I really wanted to see, was the church I had painted some time ago. It's a pity I hadn't done my homework, because then I would've known that that church was actually in the Taos Mission (close to the Plaza) and not actually St Francis of Assisi which we searched up and down the highway to find! Never mind! It was very "New Mexico"! We then had a lovely drive alongside the Rio Grande. We were soon approaching Santa Fe. Our hotel, Hilton Homewood Suites, was actually situated quite a few miles north of Santa Fe, in the Pueblo of Pojoaque. We took every wrong turning we could, before we finally had to ask directions and parked up in front of reception. We had 15 minutes left for supper and the receptionist let us stay parked where we were, while we ate! Meatballs, salad, custard and lemonade! Our suite was lovely although, for some reason, I had thought there were be a balcony and there wasn't, which was a little disappointing - but not for long! Our 2-bedroomed suite was located in one of the casitas (Wije), number 122. It was extremely comfortable. We drove down to the nearby shops for wine and ice-cream and generally loafed around, watching bunnies in the sunset!
