Day 6: Monday 6th SeptemberThose beautiful red rocks of SedonaWe had had a late night, but we were woken up by the phone ringing at 7:00am!! It was front desk to tell us that there was a message for us. From my Dad! He wanted us to ring him. This was a bit worrying - what was up? But all he wanted was to enquire about my RIBS!! But this is the other thing we woke up to this morning; the view from our balcony (patio).
Actually, the view from Paul's balcony was better - looking over the town - our balcony was a bit 'underground'.
Well, we didn't intend to do an awful lot today - and we didn't! Firstly, we drove into town (what a lovely place) and drove up to the airport road for the famous view from there. We weren't disappointed! And then we drove down to the town again, to enquire at the Information place where to buy a Red Rock pass. At the garage up the road; of course. So we did that - bought a pass and bought a few bottles of water. Then we set off for Red Rock Crossing.
The car-park was full, so we gave up on that (til later) and drove on, heading instead for Red Rock State Park. I think that we were the only people there!! It was very beautiful, but rather HOT. We looked around the visitor center and watched hummingbirds feeding and saw some beautiful blue birds and a squirrel or two.
We then drove back to Sedona and Tlaquepaque, intending to get something to eat and to do some shopping. However, we really went nothing on the place; think it grossly overrated - and we could afford neither food nor wares! So we drove back to Oak Creek Village for warm beef sandwiches from Subway (+ cookies) and then had a saunter around the Bell Rock area.
Heading back towards Sedona, we stopped at, what looked from the outside, a junk yard!! But there were some wonderful bits and bobs inside - lots of antique indian bits - and ancient saddles. Alas we could afford none of it.
We returned to the Red Rock Crossing car-park at about 4:30 and this time, we parked successfully. However, the place was choc-a-bloc with folks picnicking and making merry in the river (makes sense it being Labor Day) - nobody told us about the loooooooong walk through the woods, heaving with ants and mozzies - and it was still incredibly HOT (and we couldn't find our cigarette lighter ...!) I think I probably felt even hotter than it actually was, because I had had a cold for a couple of days (and the sneezing hurt my ribs). Anyway, we reluctantly gave up on Red Rock Crossing and headed, instead, for the Sedona Safeway, where we bought food to cook in our room (actually, microwave meals ...), some supplies for our travels ... and a pack of lighters ....
By now, I was having extreme internet withdrawals and decided to pop down to reception and use the in-house computer - just to drop a few lines to a few people - but, unfortunately, the in-house computer was broken, so no could do. BUT, the walk was well worth it, because the STARS were unbelievable. There were so many, that they made no identifiable patterns, so we couldn't tell which star was which. And we could see THE MILKY WAY!! When I first looked at this man's Sedona by Starlight webpage, I had thought that the pictures were exaggerated somehow - but they're not - that's just how they are - WONDERFUL!
