LIMB CASTS

Two "baby" limb casts from the South Fork of the Crooked River, Central Oregon

These are apparently only small limb casts - but aren't they nice! I am not actually in possession yet - but they are on their way! I think they are so fascinating.

Although they could possibly be classed as petrified wood (and some people do) - they are actually a different thing altogether. They are formed after millions of years, when the wood of trees or their roots, rots away and the space left is filled by other minerals, usually agate. You can still see the look of the bark all the way around the outside.

I've tried to find out more on the internet, but all I keep finding are sites about casualty departments and broken legs!!! :) But, you might care to have a look at Tim Fisher's Oregon Rockhounds Online! Or, straight to here for a description and map of the South Fork of the Crooked River location! Watch out for rattlesnakes!! Here is a delightful photo of the stock pond (of fish I take it - not limb casts!) at the top of Congleton Hollow (South Fork, Crooked River), which I asked permission from Tim Fisher to reproduce here.

(Another picture of the limbs. I was sent a third one, which really shows to great effect, the detail of the bark.)

Two more limb casts - this time from the Zimmerman Ranch, near McDermitt, Nevada
